Making vision come true

Ukrainian start-up “Ugears” has created the world’s first mechanical 3D- puzzle moving wooden sports car that uses no electronics, named the “Grand Prix Sport Car”. The design of the model is based on the technology of the Golden age of the automobile industry at the beginning of the XX century. The car is using UGears signature “know how” that allows implementing assembly without glue or any additional tools.

The car is equipped with a transmission switching the modes between forward, reverse, and idle. The rubberized wheels of the model ensure smooth running. The car accelerates rapidly and has a long driving range – wind it up completely, and it covers up to 10 meters.

The design of the Grand Prix Sport Car is based on racing-sports cars that participated in the early Grand Prix races that had taken place in Italy and Monaco. Those were American and Italian automobiles. A century ago, the motor racing culture was at its very dawn, but modern automobile manufacturers employ innovations and engineering designs of that time even nowadays.

The first Italian Grand Prix was held in Montichiari, near Brescia, on the 4th of September, 1921. Later, when the construction of the Monza autodrome was completed, car competitions moved to the new premises. In was during the Italian Grand Prix of 1950, in the 7 of 7 race, when the first ever Formula One World Champion won his historic race. Since that time, the Italian Grand Prix has become an essential part of every Formula One season.

“One of the reasons we created this model is to remind people about the history of mechanics and the automobile industry. Grand Prix racing had been there long before Formula One. And if you want to know, Ferrari started with an Alpha Romeo that took part in that first ever motor race, one hundred years ago. At that time it had 6 inline valves and 2 turbo fans,” – the designerOleksii Zabolotnii said.

Being passionate about automobiles since childhood, Oleksii became determined to materialise centenary traditions in his new wooden creation.

“Ever since I was a child, I was fond of cars. To me, the automobile is much more than merely a vehicle that takes you from A to B. Figuring out all the peculiarities was not a burden to me”, – Oleksii explained.

It took Oleksii over 2 months to develop the original concept. He studied every type and all the technical characteristics of the engines of the early XX century cars.

At first, he created a 3D model and transferred the technical drawing to paper and only after that moved on to working with wooden materials.

Oleksii said that the main challenge was to work around the uniform thickness of the details. Since the plywood used for the models has a standard thickness, he had to be very precise calculating the load to make sure that all parts will be put together during assembly and the car’s mechanism will work fine.

The Grand Prix Sport Car – just like the rest of Ugears’ models – assembles from plywood puzzle pieces, none of which need to be glued together. The model kit box includes a detailed assembly manual.

Following this manual you will set a passcode on Ugears Safe

By default, the Ugears Safe assembles with a standard combination lock code (4 of them are pointed in the manual). To set another code, while assembling, you will need to replace the pegs #48 and #49 located in three huge washers labeled 40, 41 and 42 into the slots with other numbers.  How to make your own safe lock combination, to find out the right digits for the pegs and to put your personal code during the assembly? It’s quite easy to do, solving a math exercise.

Let’s suppose you would like to put the code  416:

A=4, B=1, C=6

The Formula for setting plugs in the discs:

a) P2 = P3 – ((B – A + 8) mod 10)

b) P1 = P2 + (B – C) mod 10

where A, B and C are the digits of the wanted code.

For technical reasons, C can only be 1, 2, 6 or 7

P1, P2, P3 – plugs in the discs. For technical reasons, P3 – P2 ≠ 4

E.g. let’s find P1, P2, P3 for the wanted code 416:

Number 1

Complete formula a) step by step:

P2 = P3 – ((B – A + 8) mod 10)

P2 = P3 – ((1 – 4 + 8) mod 10)

P2 = P3 – (5 mod 10)

P2 = P3 – 5

If you don’t now ‘mod 10’, than just go to Google an type ‘5 mod 10’ and Google will tell you. Though we believe that you know the ‘mod’ function.

Number 2

Set in valid values, there are many possible solutions. Just choose one with P2 and P3 being 0 to 9

P2 = P3 – 5

with P3 = 5, P2 is 0

with P3 = 8, P2 is 3

Number 3

Solve formula b) with the first of the possible combinations

We will use P3: 5 and P2: 0

P1 = (P2 + B – C) mod 10

P1 = (0 + 1 – 6) mod 10

P1 = -5 mod 10

P1 = 5

again: Google will tell you, that “-5 mod 10” is 5, just don’t think about what this means :-). Though we believe that you know the solution.

Solve formula b) with the last of the possible combinations:

We will use P3: 8 and P2: 3

P1 = (P2 + B – C) mod 10

P1 = (3 + 1 – 6) mod 10

P1 = -2 mod 10

P1 = 8

Again: Google will tell you, that -2 mod 10 is 8, just don’t think about what this means 🙂 Though we believe that you know the solution.

So: for 416, use 838 or 505 for plugs in the discs.

Last, but not least, make sure to set the parts together the right way – as told in the manual. C is important when the wheels are put into the safe (For technical reasons, C can only be 1, 2, 6 or 7)

In case of emergency opening or if you forget your opening code you can make slow knob twists and carefully listening to tumbler movements that will open the lock (twist left to the first digit via 0, then twist right to the second digit via 0 and then twist the knop left again to the third digit via 0). Listen carefully every time and stop twisting on a digit when a click will be the loudest.  If the combination is correct, your safe will click and open itself on the third digit).

1. Unpacking

There is packaged puzzle opposite to you. After unboxing you will see this set:

Wooden clapboards with cut-out details;

Toothpicks, playing a role of axes of gears;

Stationery rubber bands for making a “rubber motor”.

If children participate in the process of assembling of the puzzle, be careful and help them with complex elements. Explain to the children how to carefully use toothpicks and be careful.

2. Preparation for assembly

So, you unpacked the puzzle. The first thing you need is to determine the front of the board (it is lighter and purer).

Now you can start extracting the details from the plate. BUT do not hurry to extract all the details in a row. Follow the manual and find the required numbered block, for not to sink in a heap of small details and do not completely get lost.

Extracting the details out of the wooden dowel, it is better to do this in the direction to yourself (that is, looking at the front side) or from yourself (looking at the back side) and press in places of seams or connecting bridge, if it is. So, if burrs are pulled along with the detail, they will leave the grooves in the workpiece and not spoil the appearance of the parts. It is important to do everything gently and not to hurry, as with negligence it is possible to damage the detail. If you still saw a burr sticking out of the part, it’s okay, just gently cut it or tear it off so as not to damage the part.

Especially good clean gears!

3. Assemblage

1.Take the details of the block and connect them according to the manual.If a toothpick is used in the element and it is difficult to insert, smear it with a candle. Also, with a candle, smear the projecting axes of the gears and the gear teeth themselves before fitting them into the frame. So friction will be minimal, and the model will move faster. Do not smear the details of the pendulum connection – two protruding sticks in the tractor or timer, for then the pendulum will not fluctuate but slip. As an emphasis for a toothpick, use the plate itself or the table, for not to damage your fingers.

2. And now connect the finished structural elements together, check the ease of movement of the construction. You can use the candle again, if necessary.

3. Enjoying self-greatness.

Features and algorithm of assembling individual puzzles you will learn from the manual that is included.

Good luck in the assembly, let the creation start!
